Slow Boat to China
by Leona Choy

In my nineties and one of the “vulnerables” in 2020 mandated to isolation because of the pandemic, I took the opportunity to write two more books at once to redeem the time. Conceived at the same time, the two are like conjoined twins but fraternal not identical, of course  — and (delivered) published at the same time, just off the press. They are my COVID-time twins.

The first book is a career ministry memoir of my call to China from my childhood to the present. After college and as newlyweds, my late husband Ted and I sailed off to what we anticipated would be a lifetime of ministry in Mainland China. However, the Communists were forcing out all missionaries at the time so it took 32 years before we actually set foot in China proper! As an only child, I married into a wonderful, welcoming Christian family of ten brothers and sisters. Coming from a sheltered, heartland Iowa background, I was not prepared for the struggles and adjustments and joys as I attempted to adapt to the Chinese culture. Meanwhile God brought China to us in the person of Chinese students on American university campuses. Eventually in the 1980s the bamboo curtain opened and we experienced incredible and unforgettable encounters with Chinese Christians throughout China whose stories I was able to write. I referred to the Christians who suffered for their faith as “Mei Blossoms in Winter” because the tree bursts into full bloom even in bitter winter snows.
